The steering wheel in the US 545 with sport package is the non-sport wheel. I like the styling of the wheel, but the grip's uncomfortably thin and not padded. I've heard that replacement/upgrade is VERY expensive. So, I found these guys:

http://www.american-stitches.com

The work on their site looks excellent. For $300 and change, they can strip the factory leather, add 1/8" padding and re-wrap with factory matched leather. For $600, they can do a wood/leather combo to match the anthracite dash.

That would assume I could get the wheel out and shipped to them, then wait 7 days for return shipment.

Anybody done this, or used this company? Thanks

Interesting.. I wish we had the wood/leather option from the factory. This is possible with a mercedes...

Maybe it isn't possible because it would be to Mercedes like..

I think the wood/leather option in antracite would look really good. I'm not sure it's worth 2X the price of leather, though, and it's not as sporty.

Looks like a great site - what do you do about the airbag?

I'm working on finding out how to deal with that. I read some of their content that gave instructions for some cars on tearing the wheel down, and disabling/removing the airbag. Ideally, they're looking to receive just the wheel, without any of the additional airbag and trim hardware. I'll let you know as I find out more information - forgot to ask when I talked to them today.

Be careful, I've heard removing an airbag can be dangerous.

John W,

You should have ordered the Cold Pkg. It has thicker steering wheel.

The upgrade steering wheel to the 545 Sport is free, just check off the free SMG option.

Hindsight, eh? I live in CA - so there was no need to consider the cold weather package. I suppose the cold weather wheel could be purchased; wonder what it costs . . .
