Hi,
I parked the car on a side walk and when I got back to the car and started up I got an error on board,a yellow steering wheel. After that I noticed that the steering wheel is not straight. The error dissappered but my steering wheel remained the same, like 5 degrees to the left.If I am trying to make it straight then the car is steering fast to the right. Is there a solution without going to BMW dealer who said that it will cost me about 200?? I was thinking some kind of reset.Thank you!

You probably need to reset your steering. These things usually happen on the cars with active steering. Do a search for instructions on how to reset it, I believe its turning the wheel all the way to the right, then left then back to the middle.

Thanks,I tried but it didn't work.Maybe to disconnect the battery first, or the fuse for active steering, if there is something like that, and perhaps it will reinitialize...

I had the same problem with my 2005 545i. The steering wheel was also off center. I followed the reset instructions and it would not work.

The instructions are as follows:

1. Turn the engine on.
2. Turn the wheel all the way to the left.
3. Turn the wheel all the way to the right.
4. Turn the wheel back to center.
5. Turn off engine with the wheel centered.
6. Wait at least 10 minutes before starting engine.

Sometimes there are other contributing circumstances that will cause a malfunction, such as, a low battery or low power steering fluid. I believe my voltage was too low which caused this particular malfunction. Maybe a simple charge will fix your problem or even just disconnecting the battery to remove the malfunction that is stored in the memory.

I disconnected my battery and waited for about an hour. In the process, if you have a battery charger, take this opportunity to charge the battery. Once again, a lot of times, a low battery (volt) charge will cause this malfunction.

After an hour, I connected the battery, and followed the reset instructions. I started the vehicle and it began to reinitialize and corrected the off center steering wheel on its own. I have had no problems since.

Things to remember: (common causes of malfunctions)

1. Don't forget to check your power steering fluid (CHF-11S only). - If you have low power steering fluid, check to see if the O-Ring is missing or just bad. A bad or missing O-Ring will obviously cause you to lose fluid. An indicator of this is dirt soak oil on the Power Steering Reservoir
2. Check to see if battery needs to be recharged (low battery may/will cause a malfunction).

Note: You should always seek your local dealership or mechanic for advice.
