steering wheel controls removal 08 528i
Is there any way of removing or replacing the steering wheel control without taking the steering wheel apart? I want to replace the plastic piece around the buttons as the plastic has started delaminating.

You will need to remove the airbag regardless. Little hole underneath that you need to stick an allen driver up (could use a screw driver, but you are trying to push a bar upwards that releases the corners of the airbag). It took me 30 minutes with a phillips screwdriver as the tip would not stay on the bar due to its shape. Thats why a flat headed allen screw driver is ideal. A standard screw driver could work as well but you would need to make sure the head is positioned across the bar, not parallel to it.
