Default Steering rack replacement????

Hey guys, haven't been real active on the forums. I hoping someone can help me....I have an 8/03 build E60 530i with active steering. The past week I've been dealing with a bad power steering leak...I've been refilling it every morning. Apparently my rack seals on both ends are leaking.

My Indy shop says I need a new steering rack and they cannot source any used or rebuilt 8/03 racks. The list price is $2300 from the dealer, shop price is $1650.

I'm going to get a second opinion, I'm hoping its a busted pipe or house.

Has anyone swapped steering racks from an earlier build E60 to a new build date?

I called up Pace BMW and they said its not possible due to different mounting locations. Can someone please confirm this...

Thanks guys I really need some help with this.

According to ETK you can only replace it with a rack w/ manufacture date up to 9/2003. This gives you very limited options. I'd look into replacing it with a normal (servotronic) rack, which is about $300 used. But this will also require replacement of DSC module and appropriate coding of the vehicle.

I'm aware of this, however I'm not disabling active steering. I love the feature and yes, I have driven an e60 with servo and I do not like it compared to my sport. I guess no one here has ran across this problem. I'm going to bite the bullet and go new oem.

You will find anything you need at Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market

It is a search able used parts database of most US salvage yards/auto recyclers.

Good luck!
