I love this forum. I bet many dealers would charge $$$ just for performing this reset procedure.

I had a steering warning (under warranty) ... it was the steering angle sensor that was failing. The iDrive fault cleared after a few restarts but came back. I think the reset procedure may temporarily clear a fault but the problem may only be disguised temporarily.

My Ride: '04 545iS 6 spd, bought new via eBay, 11/05; Blk/Gry, Cold, L7, PDC, BMW Rear seatcover for pets.
First "Bumwa" was a new 1971 2002. High performance 5s since 1987. Beamer motorcycles too, currently on an 07 BMW K1200 GT; also a Moto Guzzi 1000 SP III.
I have gotten that warning on cold mornings too, but the other day, (40s F) I got it as I entered the interstate. 10 miles later, as I pulled into work, I could hear the pump groaning, and shut down/restart didn't reset it. I had it towed to dealer who found a leaking power steering hose. They suggested replacing the PAIR of hoses ($145 each) and so, 3 hours labor and two qts of fluid came to $750.
Moral of story, if temps aren't cold, stop and look under the car! You don't want to risk that Active Steering pump.
