Ok. So I tried to search and didn't get anything, so here it is.......

I just went to go on a milk run (anything to drive my baby), and about 200 yards down the road, she told me that there was a "Steering Malfuntion" and not to drive any longer. Now I only had a quick trip, but checked for leaks, squeaks, etc and nothing, so I continued. When I got home, I checked the garage for puddles, and nothing, turned her off and then back on again...the message did not return. Now I didn't give it the normal few minutes of warm-up as I usually do, but then I wasn't going to wring her out either, so.....

Anyone else have this message pop up before? If so, wuz up??!! Any thoughts as to whether or not I should be concerned for my baby girl?

First of all, welcome to the forums Spyder44! I see you're from my neck of the woods too -- what dealer do you use?

Anyway, with regard to your question, these types of malfunction messages often pop up and go away just as fast as they popped up -- if you see it often, then it's likely something is up. On my car, in the morning during colder weather, I'd often get a similar warning that wouldn't go away until the car was warmed up (I'd have to turn the key off and back on again to clear the message -- but it would only stay off if the car was warm.) It turned out to be a marginally low level of steering fluid and it was a simple fix.

If you only get these types of messages once in a blue moon, don't worry about it -- it's likely just a burp in either the software or the electrical system and even if there was something wrong, it would be next to impossible to duplicate at the dealership...

Thank you!!! I kinda hoped that was the case. My wife had many bimmers in the uk, and had some issues re cold, warm-up, etc (TPC).

BTW, I live in Ligonier, but used Sterling BMW in VA as A&L were useless, Laurel could not find me the spec I wanted. Long old way to for my baby, but well worth it!! As I only just got it, (CPO), I have not had it in for service as of yet, but will more than likely take it to Laurel (close to work). You?

Spyder44,

I've had the same issue recently, and it's exactly as Rudy has described - I get the warning only when the engine is very cold.

I wouldn't be concerned - I've never noticed any effect on the car's steering function. If the warning is bugging you, take it to the dealer and they can easily add fluid or whatever it needs. Otherwise, wait until your next regular service visit.

Well it's probably a bit far for you but I use the best dealership in the Pittsburgh area -- Bobby Rahal. By the way, I love Ligonier -- it's such a nice area! Hope you are enjoying life in our little corner of the world!!

Thanks fellas. Feel better now, just got a little freaked out.

Have heard Rahal as best, will check em out.

Thanks again!
