Steering box problems.

Hello.
Have you any experience with steering box problems on your e60?
We here in Latvia do a lot of replacements and restorations for it.
Our dealers sad that BMW knows this problem an d it is on every latest model (E60,E90,E65).
And you can`t get a new one if car is out of warranty.
You can hear a rattle if you revolve on cobbled streets.

I have a front suspension clunk on things like cobbled streets (2004 535d w/51K miles). A senior dealer tech has now experienced it and promised they will fix it but he's not yet sure what it will entail. One suspicion is anti roll bar drop links or top strut mounts.

can you describe where the steering box you are referring to?
The plastic cover (where turn signal and key are located) rattle due to use of cheap materials. If it is the one you are referring to, what do they replace with? A new one or better material one?

I had a 'squeak' or 'croak' on my steering at low speeds which wouldn't resolve with a change of fluid so my dealer replaced the power steering pump and rack! under warranty of course, it was ?2,500 job out of warranty (I may have lived with it!!). Problem thankfully is now resolved.
