I started to drive to work this morning and an alert message popped up saying something about a steering malfunction please pull over. I didn't feel any difference while driving. So i just kept going. Anyone have any idea if this could be a serious problem?

Do you have Active Steering?
Your car may need a front alignment.

It could also be low hydraulic fluid. Check the reservoir labeled CHF-11S Only on the left front of engine (on 4.4L anyway)...

If you have Active Steering, an Active Steering error alert may occur from time to time. Shut down the car and restert. Turn to the right until the wheel stops. Turn to the left until the wheel stops. Repeat. Turn the car off then on. This usually reinitializes AS, as stated in the Owner's Manual. Good luck!

This happened to me a few times, only on cold mornings before the car had warmed up and only after making a left hand turn. Go figure! The hydraulic fluid was low. Ordered some CHF-11S, topped it off and the problem has not occurred since.

I could not find CHF-11S in any of the local auto parts stores so I ordered it through Amazon from Autobarn. Autobarn was slow to confirm and ship the order but all turned out well. That reservoir doesn;t take much fluid and the liter of fluid will probably last you a couple of lifetimes! Or, you can offer to sell some to all of your friends that own BMW's to defray the cost.

I just went to the dealer, and they topped me up for free when I ask to purchase a bottle.

Timely thread for me. I got the same Active Steering Malfunction message this morning. I'll try some of the suggestions and hope it clears itself. I assume it is safe to continue to drive like this?
