So I encountered my first e60 gremlin yesterday. I was driving home
after visiting a client in Connecticut and made a quick stop at a service
center on the MassPike. When I start the car again, I hear static with
the music when I play the CD. I switch to the radio and I still hear it.
I turn the radio on and off several times but no success. I turn the
radio off and plan on making a stop at the next service area to see
if turning the car off will fix it. I stop for 15 minutes and start the
car again. This time there is less static and so I turn the radio off
for the rest of the drive. When I started the car later that night,
everything was fine.
Anyone know if our cars use hardware (like traditional CD players)
to decode the music on CDs or if it is done through software? Cause
if it is done through software, the potential to play MP3s is possible.

It will come out soon... So it's pretty obvious it's done by software!
