State Inspection/Emissions warning

My Ride: 2006 525i, Silver Metallic, Black Leather, Automatic, Premium, Cold Weather, Xenons.
I am getting service reminder notice when I start my car. When I go in the service section in the I Drive it says that I need the State Inspection and Emissions test done. The car is an 2006 model. I bought it in August of 2005. Should I just wait until I get the notice from the Motor Vehicle Administraiton or do you all think I should take some action now. Thanks.
