Hi,

On two occasions now, after storing the car overnight in the garage, the engine would not start on the first try, it starts on the second try. I live in Canada and the temperatures were about -15 celsius.

I'm wondering how others are doing with cold starting, and why there is no block heater.

Thanks

Leon

It hasn't been that cold here in New York but I haven't had any problems starting my car. Definitely a little rumble in the morning but thats it. Gotta love the power.

What happens when you turn the key? Since the E60s have the start assist how long does it try before it gives up?

I got in the habbit of just turning it once and letting go and letting the start assist do all the work and when I got into another car I let off the key too fast and didnt start it

Yes, I turn the key and let it go. It does not start on the first cycle, after I release the key. It starts near the end or the 2nd cycle or for sure on the 3rd cycle.

So does it crank the 2nd or 3rd cycle itself when it doesnt work on the first? Or do you have to twist the key again?

I have had no problems either indoors out outdoors. I keep my car in a garage overnight with heat kept just above freezing. During the day, my car has been outdoors at tempretures just as cold as your in Edmonton. No problems whatsoever.

What type of fuel are you using? I have used 94 Octane Ethanol fuel since I got my car. With the ethanol added to the gas, I have no concerns rearding moisture accumulation in the fuel due to condensation caused by the car getting warm and then cooling off.

You may want to try the ethanol fuel or gas line antifreeze to see if that clears up your start issues.

Don't touch the accelerator. Turn the key once quickly to the right and back off. BMW does the rest.

I don't live in a cold place but I notice that when I start the car after it's been in the garage more than a few days it starts louder and rougher...only lasts a few seconds though....then it purrs like a kitten...er..tiger.

I have to twist the key for each cycle to start. It started fine today though.
