Starter relay
We have a 2010 528i (e60 with N52k)
Underneath the hood, and underneath the passenger side cabin filter, there is an large electronic box.
Is this where the starter motor relay resides?

I don't think you have a starter motor relay. The starter motor solenoid is engaged directly from the CAS? module I think
