In all honesty...I don't see what all the fuss is about?
If you're into loud volumes and earth shattering bass...well that's a different story but in terms of clarity, presence in the low end and relatively good top end, it delivers. A good recording sounds very acceptable in my opinion.

The radio tuner, however, really sucks. No radio text, poor reception, no presets to retune manually quickly
This display is updated as reception changes. Is this is function of the Professional Radio and its two tuners?
As for Radio Text, one [Nanny State?] opinion (doubtless of many opposing views) is "This is not normally fitted to an in-car radio, as it's seen as a distraction to drivers"

Tell me, nwilliams, are all e60s in Toronto black? That's all I saw when I was over there in May!

I find the Logic 7 almost offensive compared with the standard set up, the standard set up is pretty neutral, where as the L7 has too much flabby bass and a real shrill top end, and the imaging is horrific with the centre speaker on the dash.
Standard stereo for me and then upgrade the speakers, and if needed add a decent amp to drive them, once you start adding L7 etc. it makes adding a decent system so much harder.

I agree with gIzzE, overall. The only option I regret getting is Logic7. I don't get the concept: fake surround sound? REAL surround sound in music is awful enough!
In hindsight I'd rather have the standard system with upgraded speakers. I also agree about the sound: flabby bass, a tinny upper midrange, and no imaging. Fatiguing!
I should add that I experience mild improvement with a line-level Monster iPod charger/audio cable. Going through the iPod headphone stage to the Logic7 sounded fine in the Lexus but is butt-awful in the BMW.

Is it credible to talk about iPod, MP3 and HiFi in the same sentence?

Although I know what Geno is saying, we all know that the ipod is pretty poor on the outputs, but combine it with the BMW aux input and you are beat before you are started.

It really is not worth worrying about HiFi sound with that combo...

aybeesea,
Obviously the iPod isn't a high-end piece of gear but it's not the weakest link in this component chain. I've run iPods through my very high-end home system and through multiple car stereos. The only system with the sound problems I'm describing is the Logic7. MP3s are only as poor as your rip rate and the iPod isn't that bad a component: between it and the Airport Express outputting to a high-end DAC I personally think Apple sound runs rings around anything I've heard from Harmon Kardon.
In any case, I know how the iPod sounds; the audio problems I'm citing are from the Logic7.
