On my 05 525 with 74k on it, I have had this squeal...rubbing sounds for about 2 years now . My out of dealer mechanic who works on mostly german cars said it was a bearing...or something like that in the steering columns, but would have to be greased from underneath....never had it done.....still makes noise....really doesn'nt bother me....I'm keeping my e60 for another 14 months then either trading it in or sell it privately and getting the f10. I have never had any problems related to the sounds coming from the steering .

I had a similar noise when I turned my steering wheel past a certain point left or right and had appeared about 2 months ago. Mine was not coming from the steering wheel itself so I cant give advise for that but sounded like it was in the enginebay.

Today while my car was on a lift and had the plastic covers off of the bottom of the engine for a totally unrelated problem, I asked the technician if he knew what the reason could be for the "chink" sound I would hear as I turn my steering wheel past a certain point.

He nosed around for a while and found a heat guardplate was close enough to the bottom coupling joint of the steering rod. As you turn the steering the bolt at some stage during the revolution would scrape on the plate and make this most annoying sound. Solution - take a big 'ol screwdriver and bend it away.....problem solved.

is it possible to take a picture of that plate you're talking about? you'd be the first guy in this forum to come up with that solution.

thanks

Add one more to the list. Mine does that after removing the key and the steering raises to the exit position.

Default Steering Wheel/Column squeaks

I have the same issue with my 2005 545i. When I insert or remove the key from the ignition the steering wheel makes a loud squeaky creaky noise while it adjusts to the default memory position. Super loud and annoying. Is there a DIY solution out there?
