I am the reverse. I like to use the sportmode while driving in the city and while driving in the highway I like regular mode.

I rarely use them. I would use them all the time if my car is 545i.

When on auto mode is shifts down too easily (both D or DS) when cruising... If I want to shift down then I can still use kickdown or tap the gear down

I'm the never vote. I do sometimes downshift but never drive in DS. I have enough trouble keeping it away from the redline as it is. I don't recall ever using the kickdown either. I don't feel the need for either one.
