The runflats aren't the cause of issues with low profile tires. They might actually help prevent wheel damage from pot holes, railroad tracks, etc by being stiffer.

Re driveways, even the sport package equiped cars are no worse than others due to the short front overhang. You can't go 4 wheeling or get too close to parking curbs but its not as bad as some make it sound.

PS: Most of what I read seems to be a "standard disclaimer" so that you don't go crazy with the car and blame BMW because you drove over a parking curb or took railroad tracks at 60 MPH and damaged a wheel.
+1 Also wheel and tire insurance help.
cheers

Thanks everyone. I am going back to the dealer right now and make the transaction. With the sports package!
I'm excited! Thanks!
Smart move.

You will not regret it.

A BMW without a sport package is like a Cadillac without power windows. That is why they make Mercedes, Lexus, Acura and Infinity.... for the luxury WITHOUT the driving experience

the problems i've encountered with runflats usually start when they are less than 50% tread remaining. they become really noisy on the freeway and the grip falls way off. you have no choice but to ditch them before they get down to the wear bars. And they are very expensive to replace. We've stayed with the runflats on the 325i but MY2005 E60s still carry a temporary spare, so I had no problems choosing non-RFT. You could carry one of those Conti Comfort Kits if you need something to give you peace of mind when you go to non RFT.

As for SPP yes all of my BMW's have had them but it would depend on your driving preference. Honestly if performance driving was your highest priority, you'd choose a 135 or 335, maybe even a Z4 M for the same money as a 528 w all those options.

I faced the same decision and actually ordered my car without the sport package for that reason.

But I later reconsidered based on overwhelming opinions that the sport package is a "must have" option.

I purchased a BMW for performance so it only makes sense to get every performance-related option that BMW has to offer.

I drove a non-sport xi for a few weeks until my car arrived. The sport is simply more fun to drive. The biggest factor is ARS. I make extra turns just for fun
IMHO -There is no suspension difference between the Sports Package and Non-Sports Package with the xi. What are you referring to when you say a sports package xi is more fun to drive than a non-sports package xi? Countour seats, shadow line and steering wheel are the only distinctions between a sports package xi and non sports package xi.

Very factual ... IMHO on the xi I feel the 18" wheel and tire package add the biggest handling blesses (along with the aforementioned curses); the "sport package" on the 535xi is "trim" - GREAT SEATS, nice wheel, and less chrome / shiny stuff on the outside. The wheels and tires are not part of its sport package and must be added as a separate option.

The rear-drive 535 gets the sporting sport pieces - ARS, Suspension differences, AND 18" wheels and tires AND the other trim stuff.

I need your advice again. I almost pulled the trigger today on a new 528 with prem, sport, nav, ipod, and sirius. I was all ready to sign but the questions I've had about the sport package and the run flats made me hesitate. I've been reading that the tires and sport pkg give the car a much lower profile and so it's more suceptible to road debris and driveway damage. I love how the car w/ the sports package drives, but I have to admit everything I've read has me a bit worried. What has your experience been? Is the car all that much lower with the run flats and sports pkg? Do you think it makes a big difference in terms of road and driveway damage?

Thanks for your help.

Its lower, its possible you'll damage it if you drive it like a jeep and it is the preferred way of purchasing your car. I sure did! M Apearance package too...lower airdam. AND I live in NYC. Its the right look and ride. Otherwise, get a mercedes or audi.
