I believe he's right, the E60 sports package is an 1/2 or 1 inch lower than non-sports package cars. Will have to dig hard data to confirm though...

Edit:
However, in looking at the dimensions posted in the information section, no height difference is noted for the E60, though it is for the E39. Maybe I'm wrong but I thought a remembered several discussions on this a long time ago like back in 2004 when I bought my car. Oh well, memory must be going...
I'm having a hard time finding information showing that the ride hight (sport vs. non-sport) is any different on the E60 (regardless of engine). I see it mentioned all over about the E39 but not for the E60 for the exception of the ///M. I could also easily see the difference between my sport E39 and non-sport E39's. The only visible ride height difference I see in the E60 is between the RWD vs AWD. The sport has wider tires that fills out the wheel wells better but not height (as far as I can tell). FWIW, one of the first things I noticed in going from my sport E39 into the sport E60 was how much higher the car felt. Even with the aero kit I can clear curbs better in the sport E60 vs. sport E39. Although the over hang is longer making the approach angle worse (more scrapes on inclines).

I feel the importance of the Sport Package far outways tire life, after all even non runflate high performance tires don't get great milage. I would never buy a BMW without SP, its not just because the car might handle better, its for the ride.

After all folks, Nothing Drives Like a BMW,

Yes, hence my edit to the earlier post...
