I guess it could be. This is where it would pay off to have a remote "stethoscope" to listen to the diff and each knuckle (which contain the wheel bearings) to see who the guilty party really is.

A much happier outcome than replacing the differential (which is why it's always good to diagnose your own issues rather than blindly trusting the shop). ;-)
