Hello my friend
I have reached 260 with my car as you know and I post 2 pics of it. Note the different dates.
Thou, when I drove 260km/h last time, my Garmin said that my top speed had been 250.0 km/h.

Hi BTWMYW I hope you are not doing this in RO???

Secondly the tacho is at least 5 km/h shows you more...so when you hit 260 that is less. maybe 250-255 km/h. Same w rented M5 when Alex hit 270 Km/h that is not possible as there was Vmax (the speed limiter) and all cars from BMW has that at 250Km/h. When mine was juiced we took the Vmax out, and then measured on the rolling road. Try to put a portable GPS to see what I say, it will be few Km/h less.
OT : Same when I will change the wheels for 20"s (should really come now ) and then recalibrate the tacho, fyi I tell you as I will loose some weight, I mean of course the car, the bigger diameter will not be a disadvantage, so actually in the end there will be a small increase in performance as the UHP tires will be on instead of RFT, see all counts in.
Hi ATS,.. how do u recalibrate your speedo? Who can do it for me? I live in NL. So is this what Hamann does when they put 21inchers on the e60? Do you normally have to recalibrate with 20 inch wheels? Or is it just cause u r getting slightly larger rubber on the 20 inchers?

I hit 260km/h twice in my car just after the break-in period. Recently i have only been able to hit 240km/h on the speedo and it won't go any further, i can go up into 5th and back to 6th with TONS of rpm left. Do our cars have one of the smart limiters i've heard about that will learn how fast you drive and then limit you up to a certain speed say like 200km/h? And if so can this be removed? I have talked to Mark Dysilva up here in canada who does chips for most of the cars on maxbimmer and he said that he's not sure if he can chip the car, and to find out what people are doing....

hi

i got my car remapped incl. speed limiter removal.
there's a hidden menue when you have the 16:9 gps installed where you can see the real speed measured by gps.
it stopped 273 km/h the last time i tried.
funny thing the speedo stops exactly at 260 while the car keeps accelerating

Hi Tifiq... can you please tell us how to access the special menu to see the speeds above 255?

The sensation you feel is due to how the limiter works.
BMW have set an electronic signal barrier. The ECU gets fed with the speed signal. As soon the signal exceeds the maximum, set as acceptable, the ECU will reply with the last known allowed signal, thus limiting the top end. e.g. the ECU receives a 250k/mh signal, it will reply with the 250 signal. If it receives an exceeding signal from the sensors indicating 252 the next time, it will reply with 250 holding you back. That's what you feel as invisible hand.

Mine is mapped by www.e-maps.co.uk and I have hit just over the 270 mark on the good old Autobahn a few times this week, measured by GPS. The needle marches to 260, stops and the car still surges. Feels good and still sits solidly planted.
Well this is nice to know. Thank you !

If u do not come here to Heinz go to wetter's and then get the Vmax out, it is in all cars except military, official or diplomatic sales, so if we buy the M5 for 66thd? that wud go over 250 as there is no limiter. But we did not, maybe one day... ( But the torque of a nice diesel can be as fun as the power of the one and only beast)

ats77, if I understand correctly you're saying that diplo have no limiter...that's a negative. Mine is diplomatic and I can assure you it will not go beyond 260 indicated due to a limiter.

Yeah i was thinking about the same thing...maybe some cars that don't have an electonic limiter get after all to 260km/h. Does the 530i have one? I think it has and i am sure a member here has some pics with it's car at 260.

But hey that's too off don't you think? 240 on the tach and 225 real one? Hmmm...so that means that at 255 (limiter) you are doing probably 230ish?! So that means you are limited at 230ish ? Just a thought....
I managed to reach an indicated 258 km/h today on the A4 between Katowice and Wroclaw with my satnav GPS showing 245 km/h. Was cruising at 190 to 210 for the whole distance.

130 on the motorway I didn't quite double it so I reckon I was OK . On motorways they use unmarked cars with videorecording equipment but I usually know what to look out for. The traffic police are usually manning radar traps in built up areas on normal roads where the limit is 50 or 70.
