spark plug question '10 550i msport
I picked up a 2010 550i back in nov. i just got a brake flush and while i was getting written up at the service desk the s.a told me your at 48k and at 50k your gonna need spark plugs changed... 1st of all i thought these were 100k plugs,2nd why not do em under the free maintence while im under 50k!? he told me he couldnt cause of it wasnt due because of the time ...not sure if this s.a is trying to get a cash job rather than a warranty job that will pay less on time and less commision for him......what are your thoughts on this...thanx for all your feedback!!

I wouldn't wait 100k to change the plugs, just like most people agree not to go 15k between oil changes. I would recommend getting them changed, either yourself or an indy but definitely not the dealer.

What is the approximate cost difference between an indy and a dealer?
I'm going to my indy guy to get my oil changed in a few weeks. I'd like to have an idea what they might charge to replace spark plugs.

- Dealer's not out of line for wanting cash at this point
- Don't pay $595. Problem is one of the back plugs (forget which side) are difficult to get to, otherwise a simple DIY. My independent did it all-in in the $250-300 range as I recall.
- I changed mine in my 545 at 60k and they looked normal/could have probably gone another 25-30k at least. Others changed at 50k, and they came out looking a mess. I looked at it as simple insurance against performance degradation.

I would change it out around 65k max. Do it yourself...the plugs cost around 8-9 dollars a piece at O'reiley's or Autozone...NGK Iridium Plugs.
