I did a bit of research into this with a view to reducing costs on what has turned into a costly project!!

Some of you may or may not know that a dealer space saver and toolkit comes in at a tragic £260+vat - you can infact order a steel wheel for £40+vat - then have a tyre fitted for £75 all in - tyre size is 135/80/17 for reference.

Source your toolkit from where ever you like

Todays top tip!!

That still works out at £80 for the toolkit which is daft (brace, jack on polystyrene?).... For my previous car I wouldn't have battered an eyelid, for this ageing beast, it simply is not worth spending the extra - although admittedly I have spent nigh on £1800 on mine in two weeks so far - making me reuctant to spend more when it really isn't necessary.

Well I suppose the cheapest option is a can of tyreweld or just don't bother at all. Keep your fingers crossed, carry a St Christopher, rabbits foot or horse shoe and trust in God to save you from the dreaded misfortune of a puncture.

cheap but not covering all bases

That said I wouldnt look forward to driving a 2 ton beast like this on a space saver

Regardless, I now have the most expensive option at a reduced plice!!

You ought to try using the emergency jack it really doesn't inspire confidence and my advice would be to carry a a solid length of wood to place underneath and add stability. It really could do with a wider steel base but to fit it flat in the wheel well that parts been deleted.

haha is it really that bad?

I was toying with the idea of buying a bottle jack instead of the OEM one - luckily there are plentiful places to store such ugly items
