I haven't used it but on another forum someone used this and they said it removed a musty odor.

I used to have that smell as well, but I turned my car in and the local BMW dealer/workshop cleaned and washed the system. Smell is gone and I am happy..

Check your HVAC Micro filters and under hood air intakes. Frequently debris, leaves, etc will collect and create a place for mold and mildew to form. There are sprays that can reduce or mask odors. But the source should be located and eliminated.
+1 I just changed my filters and the musty smell is gone! The old filters were nasty. The filters cost $30 shipped from a vendor on ebay and it took me about 5 minutes to change them!

The scheduled change [free maintenance] interval is very long and under certain conditions the clogging of filters may become problematic. One easy symptom that can tip you off to clogged filters is the fogging of your inside windows when the humidity is moderate. When it progresses to smells ... UGH!!
You might try this the next time if your car in still under new car warranty. Report the problem to the dealer SA (and advise that the service interval is too long??) and see if they will cover the change.

So, on a 2005 545i, where is the return air intake?
Thanks,
Randy...

Change the interior-filter (about 40 Euro) and make a desinfection (about 50 Euro) - this should be done every 2 years. My AC starts to smell bad aswell, so I have to do this in the next days.
Sometimes when you go on the highway .. switch the AC OFF - an turn the heating for few minutes ON (high level) to dry the system.
This investment is for your health

I have been noticing a sour smell comming from the vent ducts when the A/C is first turned on. I also notice it when the fan is on low speed. Any idea what it could be? Is there something I can put in the ducts to get rid of the smell? Thanks

As other suggested, run your air or heat on full blast to dry off some of the condensation (which leads to mold).
