Sound of an I6 v. V8

My Ride: 2009 535xi, short shifter, no CDV
For 535 twin turbo, the right side (passenger) side of pipe has a valve which only open in high rev. I did manually open it while idle.... The sounds more rumbling...and low freq....
Not sure we have these kind of "noise control" device in V8 or not.

More like who would NEED to control the noise on a V8. The V8's sound is just beautiful. Music to my ears every time I floor it -- which is all the time.

Try the V12 (760)....i come across 2 of them almost the same time at the same days in the car wash and they sound very quiet! you would think V12 must sound very loud! but no, it sound even more quiet then the 750! i was very surprise.................

I am not talking about performance, but sound. Well guess I am alone. I think bmw I6's sound so sweet. I have owned big american V8s and there is just no comparison in coolness. Oh well I just am a fan of bmw I6's. Maybe its because I have always wanted one since I was a kid-I love the lightness and sweet smoothness of my engine-would not trade it for a v8 ever! Too heavy for me!

We're all talking about sound too, Diamond. You're not alone in thinking the I6 is a sweet sounding engine, it is, but the V8 (at least to my ears) does sound better. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what any of us think - enjoy what you have. You might also be surprised about engine weights - the V8 is a compact engine, V engines in general are shorter than an inline engine with the same number of cylinders. Some of the extra weight in a BMW V8 comes from the extra equipment and hardware. It's not just the engine that contributes to the weight differential. Then again - BMW could (and should) make the exhaust note on its cars a little louder. The E60 in general is over muffled and would greatly benefit from a free flowing and thus louder exhaust. It's a shame some of that glorious sound is filtered out...
