Maybe when he said designed by GM, he really meant to say designed by Land Rover when it was owned by BMW. It has since been sold to GM, and perhaps that's where the GM comes into the picture.
The old 5-speed steptronic was a GM transmission, however.
Perhaps this is what he was thinking. The transfer case in the old E46 xi was built by New Process Gear, which was a Chrysler-GM Joint Venture.
New process gear is now part of Magna, and pretty much dominates the transfer case business. To my knowledge, all BMWs use Magna Transfer Cases.
GM does not build transfer cases.

Nice theory, but Land Rover was sold to Ford.

By the way, Magna also designed and built the X3 in it's own factory. Although, I think BMW is now building or going to build them in South Carolina.
Designed is not correct. BMW is in charge of design, (product) engineering, and purchasing. Magna does the rest. Production will move to SC in 2010 (I think) when the present contract expires.

He said it's DESIGNED by GM, not manufactured by GM, which to me, it's still not American and not German. When I buy a BMW, I expected the whole car is designed by BMW.
Suppliers contribute over 60% of the value to a new car. Most large Tier-1 suppliers have design responsibility for their systems, as they have more expertise than the OEM does with their individual products.
That being said, GM did not design the E60.

Well, the guy has his own shop and doesn't work in BMW anymore. So he's not trying to sell me anything. Like you, once I've heard the name GM, I'm all pale

How come GM does not have same xi drive technology in their autos?
He does not work with BMW and may be this reason?
Can he prove or atleast give some evidence? Because when other auto Industries put some technology /parts in other autos, it will be big news and there should be such news in some autos/auto/Tech magazines and web sites?

If you think BMW designs and builds every component on the car, you are about to have a very rude awakening.

The one where you believe his knowledge is somewhat reliable.
Ask our forum members here how reliable any information about the E60 is coming from even a current service department head, let alone a former one...
