First of all, the headrests don't get as close to my head as they did in my E39. Also, I think the sport seats in my E39 were a smidge tighter. And finallly, the steering wheel in my E60 w/ sport package & heated wheel isn't as fat or as small as the sport wheel in my E39. Other than these 3 very minor things, the car is just fantastic and the driving characteristics make you forget about those 3 things real fast. Anyone here go from an E39 to an E60 and notice the same things?

My Ride: 528i
Model Year: 2011
I went from a 2001 E39 to a 2004 E60 and the new model is better in every way.
Especially in the snow. THe E39 was almost impossible to drive in snowy conditions. The E60 is fantastic anytime.

I agree if you consider the sum of the parts that the E60 is far ahead. However, the E39 had the edge is some departments, even my 1996 born E39 had some better edges..

My Ride: 2008 550, Carbon Black Metallic, Natural Brown Dakota Leather, Sport Package, Sport Automatic Transmission, Cold Weather Package, Power Rear and Manual Side Sun Shades, etc.
Retired - 2004 545 SMG, Black Sapphire Metallic, Auburn Dakota Leather, Cold Weather and Sports Packages, Power Rear and Manual Side Sun Shades
My E39 (2002 530 Sport) had 3 seat pre-sets compared to 2 on the E60. And the E39 had 2 windshield washer sprays - regualr and the concentrated. Minor, but better on the E39.
I also liked my E39 wheel better, but that just a matter of taste.

Yep, we've discussed the headrest issue many times on here in the last 18 months. This is one area that the E60 is noticeably behind the E39 and is an example of cost cutting going too far. The E39 was also constructed from materials which at the very least had an appearance of better quality. Other than that the E60 is way out in front IMHO.

I can't speak for e39, but my 2002 e53 (X5) had better paint, that's for sure. The front end on the e60 is chipping like crazy for a car with only 4K miles.

Mine too!
If we leave the bare aluminum untreated, would it rust like iron and create fish-eye on the paint?

Also I think the cabin had a more upmarket feel to it. Other than that the E60 is a massive improvement. I believe my new E60 will resolve the issues I have with my current ride.

[/quote]I hope so - I'm trading up from a '98 E39 528 and expect delivery of my 535d around the same time as you (probably). I am a little worried about the lack of side strips, but lets see...
