My 530D has a lot of black smoke coming out when i accelerate fast after i have been driving in the city, if i drive hard, the black smoke is gone. But it is not just a little smoke, i cover the car behind me... I have had it at the dealer, and they changed the Turbo filter. But no difference. Could it be the AGR valve? If i put in a bypass valve here, will i get a fault in I-drive?

I have also noticed that when i go from 80 - 120 km/h, the car seems to skip ahead a bit, it feels like a overdrive gear sets in during the acceleration. The dealer tried to change the oil in the gearbox, but this did not help.

Any tips???

AGR valve maybe could be wrong if You have a little black smoke, as You say it a big black screen of smoke then think about if AGr valve works properly then all this black smoke goes back to engine i think it is not the reason
maybe problems with turbocharger, maybe incorrect amount of fuel delivered to engine.
maybe some turbo air pipe leaking air?

but what the dealer said about that?

Try replacing the air filter. You get excessive smoke when you starve the engine of air

The dealer checked the air filter, but it was fine. The dealer cant find anything wrong, nothing comes up in diagnostics.

So im stuck....

can You get fuel correction amounts? good dealers
black smoke comes from if You have air not enough or fuel too much.
when You get coorection amount then reading shoulg be -4,5 to +4,5 if the reading is in this range then injectors are good.
as i say maybe You have some air pipe broken so You havent enough air for correct fuel amount.

I guess you have an early build 530d without the particulate filter (downward pointing exhaust). I have the same "issue". When driving slowly for 10-30 min constant, and I want to accelerate fast, a black-diesel smoke cloud comes out of the exhaust system. It doesn't look good  on a premium car.

Sometimes it helps if you downshift 10 seconds before and some of the build up in the exhaust system is burned before you accelerate.

Yes, the 2004 model with down pointing exhaust. And i know it will give som black smoke, but it did not smoke as much before.

Some people say that this helps with black smoke

Have anybody tried this?

No idea if that bypass will help you.

Look at your injectors. Some diesel cars smoke, when they get too much fuel injected...

I drove a 535dA Touring the other day, mapped to 350 hp and 750 nm, the particulate filter was removed, and it did smoke a lot during heavy acceleration, due to the fuel / air mixture.

Mine is a 2004 which used to have the diesel particulate filter (DPF) until I got it removed / mapped out. My pipes are not down facing. Now after a slow crawl, if I accelerate fast, I see whitish/black smoke in my rear view mirror. In a way I miss the DPF but honestly I'm glad I have no DPF. DPFs are notorious for getting blocked up especially in extra cold weather with lots of extra short journeys ! And they cost a bomb to replace (£1200) which is silly really. Anyway, do you have a remap on your car as that can also increase smoke.
