Thanks should I check when the engine is cold and off or cold and on?
If you don't have an owner's manual one is available for download at the INFORMATION section of this forum. This is an extract from it:

My coolant reservoir cracked at 70k miles in my e60, and on my 540 e39 the radiator went bad at 99K miles. On both BMW's these were plastic parts, and probably on the F10 it'll be plastic too!! horrible material. But on both instances i got warnings (low coolant level in the idrive e60, and smoke coming out from my e39! )
As previously said above, when you check the levels, make sure the car is cold.
GL.

I realize this is an old thread, but I located similar color and consistency fluid on my garage floor too! Did you ever confirm the source and identify the fluid? I agree with the previous post and believe it's antifreeze too. How much was the cost for repair/replacement for the plastic resevoir tank (or estimation of the cost)? Thanks in advance. I'm a little freaked to see that my car is leaking. damn...

Remember this thread?
When I was installing my RPI Scoop, I took the time to also check all fluids.
It turns out my Coolant was at the absolute minimum. I drove to the dealer and it turns out they had to replace the hose that was going to the radiator because it was leaking.
Glad I discovered it ahead of time

Did your engine overheat on the E39?
