Thanks for replying, that's what I thought too. I don't have any problem at all so not planning to get the update. But am I missing anything significant to want to get the update while still under warranty (of-course have to come up with some excuse/problem).

On the side note, when I got the mp3 retrofit I used the bulletin (attached here) which clearly states to use program 20.0 or higher to do the mp3 retrofit.
So how can it still be at 17.1 which the car came with from the factory, it?s still a puzzle???

I wasn?t planning to get the software update as I don't have any problems with the car. But after reading through a lot of the threads about the different versions I'm re-thinking. Do you think I should ask for the update while still under warranty (of-course I have to come up with some kind of problem that will require a full upgrade). I have about another 4 months left before I hit 4 yr. mark and still way below the 50,000 miles.

Is it worth it?
Should I not even consider it?
Do you foresee any potential problems?
What is the best excuse to use to try to get the update?

So many questions..... Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks.

OK, After much debating and searching, I almost concluded that the dealer must have made a mistake when they told me that I have version 17.1 which the car came with. I have had the mp3 update done in Nov. 08 and it took them about 5-6 hours to do that update, they kept the car overnight. My mistake, I did not ask them about the update, if they updated the whole car or what and to most importantly what version I have. If they updated the whole car I must have the latest version now.

Since I have not seen any other car with such older version software (ver. 17) so I don't know how the idrive screen looks like. From reading here I gather some of you might have seen this, you know different (gray) color or any other difference. So I have snapped some pictures of my idrive in action and hoping some/any of you can identify and try to tell me if I have such an old version or I might have a newer version (I know if it is newer, it would be most current, most likely). As if I have the most current version, I don't want them to mess with my car but if I have the older verison, I would like to get that updated as it is a really really OLD one.

Thanks for your help and time.
Here are some pictures of my iDrive screen.

Thanks Ben, for easing and confirming my concerns. Yeah, I doubted that I had 17.1 all along but due to my knowledge (or lack of) any older version, I was not sure. I think some lazy tech. at the dealer just gave me the first reading they saw rather than what I really have!!!!

Thanks again.

For those of us with NAVIGATION this does not tell you about the PROGMAN (or Target Data Status) version level.
