Do you have to have something wrong with your car to get a software upgrade? Can i just take it in and say upgrade me fools?

yes, you need to have a reason for the upgrade. Whether it is a problem you're having or a recall that requires the upgrade. No getting it just to have the latest, greatest.

Yes, more or less. Make a list of the things you are supposed to have and don't and the things you have that aren't working properly. For example, my list includes MP3 which, as far as I can tell, I am supposed to have but don't. And, my list includes my not-quite-functioning-properly RDS.

But bear in mind the upgrade takes hours - and your list of issues may be bigger after than it was before ;-)
If it works leave well alone - let others debug the new software releases whenever possible
