Don't know a thing about the BMW diesel but have read a fair amount on the VW TDI. They have a two stage (temp) glow plug, the first to start and the second to improve ignition/combustion on a cold engine. A main objective of that second stage is noise reduction and smoothness. IMO the BMW is likely a more high tech engine than the TDI (tho I don't know that), it wouldn't be much of a leap to assume it had a similar scheme and something in the software was turning off that second stage.
