Would the software update cause active steering too disappear all together? I had my software updated last week and my steering wheel is center but it feels like theres no active steering anymore, steering is now very stiff.

It shouldnt... have you ever had your car updated? Sometime in 2005 or 2006 BMW updated the AS software to give more feedback so you must have gotten use to the old AS software which required much less steering effort.

A really easy way to test AS is to drive at 2-3 mph or even at a standstill, turn your wheel... it should only take 3/4 turn each way to reach full lock.

hmm I'll have to give this a try I bought the car used in the summer and not sure if it has ever been updated until last week when it was done. thanks

Just returned from the dealer....reset my AS, and they did a 4 wheel alignment...said the toe was out. Weird because I didn't haven any issues with it before I dropped it off. Oh, and it was the AS module that crashed that they replaced.
They cleaned the grease prints off that the tech left behind....and also activated the DRL's, which the SA said is normally a $115 job .... but they did it for free.....maybe because I told him his fly was down when he stood up to greet me when I came in...I dunno Classic! I would not of done it had they charged me...thats nuts!
Only thing I don't like about the drl's is you can't just have the angle eyes on by themselves anymore.....oh well.

To reset AS takes about 5 min. Get in the car, start it up and turn you wheel all the way to the right, then all the way to the left and then center the steering wheel again. Let run for another couple secs. Then turn off the car and let sit for a minute. start her back up and AS is re-aligned. Your problem was the wheel alighment, which means that they did an alignment somewhere of your wheels and forgot to center the steering wheel when making that alignment happened to me before.

That reset method does not always fix this problem. There is another, more complete reset procedure that involves hooking the car up to a computer at the dealer and performing a reset. I think it still takes about 5 minutes, you just can't do it yourself...

ahh... when ever I take my battery off I get the AS warning, which has been quite a lot lately while trying to help someone else figure out their wiring for the heated steering wheel retrofit Anyone know what the full AS reset does compared to re-aligning?
