Interesting. Given my experience with BMW software upgrades on my (gone) 545i, I decided never to do one if at all avoidable on our 335i or my M Roadster. Every time I did an upgrade I ended up worse off in some respect--basically one step forward and two back. At the end, a software update made voice command, etc., etc. so bad that I quit caring. I drove it for 3 or 4 months not caring what worked anymore. I just turned the car in that way. I would not be surprised if the article is true. Unfortunately, almost no one does the sort of performance measurement needed to say anything beyond SOP. And, the worst measurement method known is SOP.

My understanding is that yes...this would affect 535 as well. That is why I do not plan to get the update. It also limits the amount of power you can add from tuning software because it adds an additional field that records over limit on torque that can be caused by tuning the car. (the original, pre march 2008 software does not record/limit this)

The 535 is the worse car to try to feel or perceive performance changes. Its cabin is very quiet, the exhaust is quiet and the engine's power curve is very flat thought the rev range. I would need to see some real data to believe this.

I tend to agree with you on this point about feeling a difference in a 5er, but regardless of the possible decrease in performance...the new software definitely does limit ones ability to tune the car. That is a known fact and information about that was released directly by BMW.

There are countless threads in the various BMW forums with people complaining about how their cars are performing poorly after the update VS before the update. Here is one 41 page thread on e90post: Has anyone contacted BMW regarding 29.2 and lag?

It made the front page of Autoblog last Friday...
BMW dealers have been coming up with what ever excuses they can to try and install the updated software on the E90's.

Pennetta is correct.
I would definitely say that it is very hard to find out what changes do to the E60's due to Weight ( not much more than E90's but still couple hundred lbs) Sound deadening , and aero management under the car.

The E60's are much more quite the the E90's, have more restrictive exhaust, and some of the engine parts are located in different spots ( see the discussions on the Oil coolers, and inter coolers).

BMW still won't admit there is a problem, with the N54 29.2 software, even though some of the tuners have found the difference in the throttle pick up. Same HP and Torque # but the power curves are now different. The power band seem to have shifted to more higher end than what BMW has published previously.

Some of the trouble may be that dealers are doing the software update, but not doing the corresponding update to the fuel pump software, this will play out a bit more before any thing is concrete.

The thread over at e90post.com is like 40 pages long, and there are like 2-3 sub threads happening at the same time.

FYI: The difference is only 55 lbs. The 335i is 3,605 lbs, and the 535i is 3,660.
