Windows? My gosh!!! And I have to reboot my laptop everyday!!! Security issues, poor programming, etc. I think not. Idrive may be programmed in C or C++ but God forbid, not based on Windows OS.

Think we are mixing up here:
OS is "Windows CE Automotive". Programming tool is Java.

Unfortunately, that's correct!

[/quote]That stack diagram would seem to contradict, unless that diagram denotes multiple interconnected systems (the Java frontend being run on CE on one device, communicating with the VxWorks native foundation on other devices). I'd expect to see this layer (CE) in a stack representation though - you generally layer everything of importance so you can visualize what interacts with what.
I don't dispute the fact that Windows CE Automotive is used - it is used... I'm just not clear where.

There's lots of different chapters to the BMW software story. Try some of these links:

Maybe if iDrive was running off a Mac, we wouldn't have all those people complaining about iDrive. We just need an idoit-proof system to satify everyone.
If I remember correct, MS and Sun had a lawsuit over Java (no coffee), and MS lost. Now JVM is on CE for the GUI? No wonder people are reporting glitches etc. and CIP updates work for some and not for others. hmmm . . . this story is similar to my Windows computer. I don't blame people for going to the TUX (Linux). It rules.
