This is what I heard from an ex-dealership serviceman. After that you will no longer be able to upgrade unless you change the ECU.

i've heard that from my dealer as well. i think they have to replace the computer after the 13th update. most of us don't have to worry about this problem since we probably change to the newer models or some lucky ones are having fun with their m5. however, the next owner will have a big problem :'(.

Could be feasible - it depends on the technology used within the ECU for storing the data. Some technologies only survive a small number of writes before they start to lose data.

13 does sound low though.

It should not be a major issue. Most owners will probably update their software three-four times all along the life of the car. Even calculating TWO updates every year, that means at least six years of service before you run out of software-updating capacity. And for that time BMW will stop any developement on the E60 because a new model will enter production.

....and 21.0 and so on.

Pls remember you can update your software up to a max of 13 times only.

There is no reason to worry about. It's very unlikely you will ever come close to this figure with your E60. And remember that software updating is performed only when there is problem and it's not a standard procedure. I seriously guess that any car will ever receive more than three-four updating all along its life.

I don't have any list of fixes nor the list of new bugs that will be generated.?

They told me it should fix at least amber LEDs issue, TMC (traffic info), transmission problems (steptronic), headlight sensor issues, Bluetooth with new mobiles ...

Wait and see

Well, I'm waiting eagerly the new software release. In any case, having just updated my software to cip 17.1, I can say that my TMC is working, my LED the same, my Steptronic improved in smoothness and all communication system is working very well.
Also, the booting time is shorter now and that the I-drive system is quicker in accepting instructions and with less mistakes. For me, a big improvement.

And the new perspective navigation software is great, far superior to the old 2D version and more user-friendly with all the software buttons easily reachable.

That's not fair, you're free of bugs just because you choose a good nickname

You should not worry too much.

If you reach some u/g limit it will not be your problem, they must hand over a new ECU under general warranty terms.
