I will be purchasing a 550i in the fall. I already own a 01 530i spp, etc. Will true snows help in the winter? I have a 05 pathfinder also, and my 01 530i has conti extremes which are adequate in the light stuff. I live in Boston and do not want the 530xi over the 550i, but would make that sacrifice if need be. The suv will be for my son and the 530i will be going to my wife. Thanks....

Yes. Snow tires make a world of difference. I am using blizzack ws-50's & I have been very please with their performance. The ws-50 are pretty extreme for snow with the downside being a very soft ride with a low handling limit. There are other snow tires out there that have less compromises, albeit at the expense of snow traction.

I recently came out of an X5 (with snow tires), and have been pleasantly surprised at how well the 530 does in the snow. The car is very balanced with predictable handling. If this is your only concern, I wouldn't let is stop you from getting the car you want (550).

I highly recommend the Dunlop Winter Sport M3's as a dedicated winter tire. It provides superb snow traction and the ride on dry pavement is amazing 4 a snow tire. The snow tires do make a world of difference. I had a pair of Winter Sport M2's on my '00 540. Good luck!

Winters will make all the difference in the world. I too drove a 530 before my current 545. I never put winters on the 530 and I suffered. this winter, with the winters and lots of snow, no problems.

I am using Michelin Alpina's and love them.

Absolutely agree - and DO NOT get the AWD BMW!! Good snow tires on a RWD car will handle better than all season's on an AWD car. Remember, AWD does not help you stop!

Blizzaks are great snow tires - drove on them for 12 years. The Dunlop M3's are supposedly the best compromise between good snow tires and good dry weather. I'd get the M3's for the 10 or so days in Boston you have to drive on snowy roads.

My 545 6speed sport package is absolutely unsafe in the snow. I have driven in snow for 33 years. The combination of high horsepower and big fat ultra-high performance summer run-flat tires is simply deadly. Even after a dusting of snow, keeping the car on the road is a major challenge. You must get winter tires to drive this car in snow. Even then, I doubt that it will be great. I love the car despite all of its quirks. When there is snow in the forecast, I leave it in the garage and drive an SUV.

Got Dunlop Snows (non-runflats) on my 545ia. Great handling whether on snow, wet or dry pavement. Don't drive a 545 sport without true winter tires in the snow. Performance tires MUST come off in winter. You really don't have a choice. You won't get far without dedicated snows, four of them!
