A friend of mine just sent me these pictures of his car. Details are below.
He parked his E60 at the Toronto airport in very cold weather. When he returned back home after approx 1 week, the car started, but stalled just a couple of km's away. So, he had to have it towed. The service manager explained that in some cases, the crankcase ventilator valve can stick shut, trapping the oil in the top of the motor. This probably caused the car to stall.
The service mechanic opened up the motor, sucked the oil out, replaced the valve and got it going again. Took it for a test drive and noticed after only driving a couple blocks that smoke was coming out from under the hood. When he pulled into a parking lot and opened the hood, he said it was a ball of flames. He closed the hood and called for help but within only a couple minutes, it had burned completely through the hood.
Apparently BMW has sent out acknowledgments that they are aware of the problem. Did you know about this? If it's been discussed on this forum before, I apologize for the duplication / repost. I was shocked to see the pictures and learn of this issue.
The insurance company wrote off his car and in this economy, he was able to purchase a 2 year newer car (I believe 535) for the same price!
Just thought I would share to get your feedback on the crankcase ventilator valve issue.
