I've just purchased a late 53 E60 530d - I assumed that such a recent BMW diesel would hardly smoke at all but mine produces a good rear view mirror's worth if I put my foot down. It happens mainly if I have been cruising at say 60 on the motorway and then put my foot down hard to accelerate away. Is there something wrong or is this just the way it is? Thanks Mark

My 53 plate 530d used to produce whiteish smoke under full acceleration that was noticable in the headlights of cars behind me. I only covered 19,500 miles in it. You don't state your mileage. Probably worth taking to your dealer for warranty work if its black smoke!

Our car is from 02/2004 and it dosen't smoke much, but if I drive behind the car, and my dad wants to get away from me, I can sometimes see a black smoke..

Try another gasstation next time

If it isn't consistant with the oil usage then it's the diesel try Tesco's / Sainsbury they sell the best assuming of course you're in GB

Wow! That's a few miles for a 53 plate! Surely that would be plenty of motorway miles so fairly low stress... I would get a dealer to check it out - has it been serviced correctly?

In general quite alot of black smoke at full acceleration is due to 2 main reasons: either the engine is quite old (alot of miles) wich in ur case it isn't, OR turbo problem.
Check the smoke during day time...at night every diesel get some smoke in other's cars headlights and this can be tricky because u can see quite good the quantity but not to good the colour.
Do an oil change, and have the turbo checked, and try the best diesel where u live! Than see the results...

I think the warranty runs out at 60k miles too so check it out before you do too many miles.

ran it past my tech....get the turbo checked out.....especially if still in warranty. (dont compare to post may 2004 530d's as they got particulate filters (and straight exhaust tips))
