I'm going for an 530i next year. SMG and AT are possible on this car at same cost, I prefer SMG but BMW says that SMG cannot be combined (AT is no problem) with an towing bar. Anyone who knows if this is true, and for what reason.

Generally speaking AT's are better for towing because you don't have to worry about burning out a clutch. I know there are lots of people with MT's that tow. The SMG might have problems trying to balance a smooth launch with over heating the clutch. I don't have an SMG but I recall some people having issues wit over heating the clutch while in hill climbs durring stop and go traffic. But this is only a guess.

Ya its probably too much work for the clutch to tow somthing with SMG. I know I wouldnt do it. But I have seen plently of people tow stuff with manuals... if its occasional use it should be fine... and assuming you're not towing somthing HEAVY uphill in stop and go traffic.
