So my question is, when the engine is off does the hydrallic clutch automatically disengage?
Yes, except I think the proper terminology is that the clutch automatically "engages"...

Bottom line is that you really should park the SMG in gear -- there's no harm in doing so and there's certainly a benefit if the e-brake fails or pops out of it's detent (which happened to mine a couple of times!)

Hi I am in the market to purchase an M5, would like some information regarding SMG as I have been reading extensively...

Does SMG come with Automatic mode like steptronic?

Does SMG use clutch pedals on the floor to change gears or is it paddle shifters/gear box?

What should I be looking for? I love the manual mode but I also would like to drive comfortably in automatic. Thank you.

smg is far from comfortable... the only time I can say its comfortable is when your cruising on the highway. If in stop and go, its really not anything like my 530i automatic which is one of the smoothest shifting cars around.

smg is more fun though... no clutch pedals. you can put it in auto mode but its very jerky although it serves its purpose when necessary.

In particular:
* Do you frequently roll to a stop using Neutral, or downshift progressively?
[I downshifted progressively to first gear]
* Do you let the transmission automatically drop thru the gears when stopping (based on min revs), or row the boat yourself?
[I always used the paddles to keep both hands at 3 and 9 o'clock on the steering wheel, that one of the benefits with this transmission is not to have to take your hand off the wheel]
* Do you use the Sport setting more, or the "regular" mode?
[100% time use Sport Mode]
* Do you park in Neutral, or leave it in gear?
[left it in gear, extra protection against rolling away when parked]
* Any other tips?
[remember this is a single clutch manual with a computer controlled clutch, even in auto mode it will never be as smooth as a true automatic transmission]
