Evidently the 2006 5 series will not be offered with SMG, it's either manual or a new 6 speed steptronic. For now, M cars will continue to offer SMG.

I know that BMW is working on a dual clutch ZSG transmission similar to the Audi DSG tranny. Evidently they're also working on a 'super quick' version of the DSG for their M cars. If this is the case, I would expect the SMG to be a thing of the past in the near future. Probably not good for resale, although it will probably be a few years before the new tranny makes it to the M5. Maybe never. Anyone hear anything about this?

Does anyone know more info about the new DSG that BMW is going to unleashed? Anyone has tested Audi's DSG and how good is it?

I've driven an Audi TT 3.2 with paddle change. I was really impressed with the manual gear change under full power and the auto change at low speed. never driven BMW's version so can't comment but if its anywhere as good as the Audi's I'd like one.

Shame the Audi wasn't that quick, certainly no match for the 535d.

I hope BMW continues to offer SMG in the future. There's no way I can go back to a traditional manual now...

I'm guessing the vast majority of 5's are sold with step. It probably doesn't make business sense for BMW to continue offering 2 transmissions for the remaining minority.

I've driven the SMG in an E46 M3, and didn't care for it. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I really don't mind using my left foot, even in traffic (I have about an hour commute each way). We should be grateful that at least BMW continues to offer manual transmissions in its midsize offerings, which can't be said for the competition.

Ya I agree I dont mind using my left foot in traffic either... I still do. SMG is nice for traffic too but somtimes I would like to control the clutch engagement a little more at slow slow traffic.

WOW you commute 1 hour each way!?!!?!? DUDE what you do take? the long route to work? Like AROUND the island instead of through it?
