So am I !!!

I think they do it with the right up and left down on the emmy because they want to force the driver to have both hands on the steering wheel.
BMW is allways thinking on security/safety issues. So I guess that's why, and it seems that's somehow the same with the AS what is not available in the M5...

If they are trying to force M drivers to keep both hands on the wheel, then they'd give them AS.

I still think it's all about who manufactures the systems and not anything deeper than that. What's puzzling is that regardless of manufacturer, they could use either paddle setup since they're only causing switches to open and close.

Well, you might be right. I really don't know...

But I do like it the way it is on the emmys, even though the usual driver will most likely prefer them as they are on regular E60's.

That's OK if you want to commit both hands to the wheel ALL the time. Not me, though.

I need the other hand to wave at all the people who are staring at me when I pass by. I always wonder if it is the car or me they are looking at..

JDN, I agree. That's one of the reasons I think the E60 paddles are better. Although I do it most of the time, clearly we don't always have both hands on the wheel -- for whatever reason. Main reason? iDrive.

I love the fact that I can be using iDrive with my right hand and still up or downshift with my left hand.

Even though I always try to use the hands-free BMW phone, once in a while I'll receive a call on my other cell phone that I carry on my belt. Once I answer it, I use that phone's built-in speakerphone but I need to take my hand off the wheel to get the phone out of my belt clip, etc.

Finally, my tired old brain adapts much easier to the concepts of "fingers = upshift, thumbs = downshift" or "pull = upshift, push = downshift". I'm sure I'd get used to the way the M cars do it but something tells me that "left = downshift, right = upshift" can get messy -- especially if the wheel is turning.

It's just a little confusing with the CC/ACC. Because you have to push to increase speed and you have to pull to decrease...

That's not the tough part for me, Ice. This old boy has a problem with the left had when going from a month of driving around in city traffic to a two or three day cruise on the open road. Around town, the left hand is conditioned to the turn indicator. Got that down pat. On the highway, the left hand is conditioned to the CC. Got that down pat.

But when I go to do a lane change on the highway, I have been known to turn off the CC instead of putting on the flashers. That is one I haven't figured out yet. There is too much time between road trips.
