E60 paddles are much more convenient for street driving. You still have at least one paddle handy, if not both, if you want or need a shift with the wheels locked in a turn.

I wonder why the make that distinction between the paddles? I sort of like the one side to upshift and the other to downshift type of thing. anyway, no big deal i suppose.

Right hand upshift, left hand downshift is how they do it in F1. I personally think the way they do it on the Z4 and E60 is better for the average driver. It's much easier to use either hand to do whatever you need. Also, it helps if you are turning the wheel -- you don't need to figure out what paddle you're touching. (Of course you can always use the shifter if the wheel is turned in such a way that you have a hard time finding the right paddle.)
I think the reason there is a difference in the first place is due to the SMG manufacturer. I'm pretty sure that the E60 and Z4 SMG electronics, etc. are made by Magneti Marelli and the M-cars use an SMG made by Zuffenhausen(?) or something.
