I noticed that M3 and M5 SMG paddels have + and - on them and look flatter at the thumb position. Just wondering why?

Also anyone swap out their steering wheel for an M5 wheel yet?

The paddles are different because the entire SMG system is different on the M-cars. On the M-cars, the plus paddle upshifts and the minus paddle downshifts. It doesn't work the way the non-M cars do where each paddle can up or downshift depending on whether you push or pull them.

I know that the plus/minus configuration is more "standard" on race cars, and other exotics but if you ask me, I prefer the push/pull setup where you can shift the car with one hand or grab whatever paddle is closest to your hand if you're in the middle of turning, etc.

I think there are some people who changed to the M5 paddles (or maybe the entire M5 wheel) -- was it kigerka? Hobi is probably the guy most qualified to give advice on that kind of retrofit...

I've never driven an //M car so can't compare the physical layout, but I agree with you and do like the way the SMG paddels are set up on my non-M car. I do wish the turning ratio was a bit tighter though. I find myself having to use the center shifter in tight turns because I've got the wheel turned 180+ degrees.

Thats also another problem with the non M SMG paddles. The M ones are stuck at 9 and 3 o'clock so you'll never "not know" where the paddles are.

I prefer the ///M.

Yep. Wait for Hobi's website launch. He will sell the parts you need to switch the paddles.
The +/- on the M5 paddles are illuminated too, so they are (attn. RUDY) "heated" (since the LED's are warm, and the back is some kind of foam padding).

You should've gotten Active Steering then.

(Technically, you're not supposed to shift when your car is cornering that hard though)

PS: I prefer the M paddles, since I'm used to driving race cars with similar layout.

Jet190rs - You're right I should have gotten AS...I just didn't have enough seat time in test driving. Plus, I never did get to drive an SMG model before I ordered one. I was just too over consumed with the power difference between the 545 I tried and my 330. Now that I'm past the innitial excitement of my new car, I'm starting to notice the differences in handling characteristics. Still..overall very pleased...and at the rate I'm racking up miles I may only be a couple of years away from another new one!
