Once in a while it gets stuck in 1 or R and will not switch to N, regardless of what the shifter is doing. Sometimes it gets stuck in N too. Is this a software glitch? I have 11.x

Same here. I find that sometime I need to turn the key back to the 0 position put it in N (sometimes need to put it in D then N).
Eventually I get it.

I think the best solution is to ignore the display. Slap the stick where it is supposed to be and go ahead. Worked on starting this morning. Don't wait for the display which can be slow to respond. Just slap the stick to N and crank away. Same thing on moving to R or 1st.

In my experience, unless the display shows the right gear, the car wont go... I was stuck at a stoplight for 30 secs the other day after switching to N. It would not go back into 1...

Right, I have been caught in that situation, too, PabloR, having difficulty getting back to a gear after rolling to a stop in N. But what I was referring to was the original crank and getting going. Sometimes the display is slow to respond to the stick position.

I notice that when the car is off the LED indicator on the SMG still lights up showing where the gear lever is. like in D or N is that normal or is it suppose to shut off?

The light will turn off after about 15 minutes when the car goes into sleep mode.

True, but as of late, I have just been slapping the stick to where it is supposed to be, ignoring the display, and cranking. It works. To heck with the display.

Careful there JDN! The BMW lemon law lawyers might see that and claim that you abused the car, voiding any warranty and lemon law claims!!

Always leave it in gear. It does add a step but already I'm like a pilot hitting switches to get going. Foot on brake, Shift into neutral, Turn the key, accept the legal disclaimer, put on seat belt, hit sport button, floor accelerator.
