I have a mixed feeling on the overall reliability of SMG after reading so many chats, especailly for 5 series.

The fact is sales staff of BMW in Hong Kong also discourage me to install SMG, even I am willing to pay more. He said so many customers have to bring their car to service for technical breakdown of SMG.

Your thoughts and experience please

I've been flipping the SMG levers for 14 months without any mishap. I didn't even realize that reliability was an issue.

I am no expert in these matters, but I believe we are now in the 3rd generation of the SMG series (SMG III), so I think reliability is very good.
SMG I in the E36 M3 was known to be troublesome, but I think SMG II in the E46 M3 was on the whole reliable............but you should get some more expert opinions from this forum.

I haven't had a problem in 14 months either. The following poll might put your mind at ease:

If you think you want SMG, just order it!

Remember this is a Global Board and considering this vast scope and the fact that more is written about what's wrong than what's right with the car, I think there have not been many SMG problems.
I am at 14,000 miles and 14 months without any SMG problems.

GET IT! You wont be sorry. Its an awesome transmission. There's not THAT much problems with SMG... have you read some of the Automatic transmission slam problems? Same thing... my SMG slam problem was fixed with software update.

My dealer was against it when i wanted to order it too... but hell with that. I went for it and enjoy it A LOT! I just recently drove a 545 automatic more extensively and I didnt enjoy it as much. shifts were lazy... down shifts were very lazy. SMG is much more fun.

GO FOR IT!
