My i-drive usually acts very sluggish immediately after startup. Just very slow to react to commands. After a minute or so it will react normally. Is this normal or should it respond quickly to every command immediately after startup? I believe I had a software upgrade just a few weeks ago.

Mine is too.... Takes about a minute before I can even change the radio volume.

My wifes x5 is immediately responsive.

try unlocking the car sooner, so that the system has more time to boot up.

It's normal... it's a computer, all computers run slow at some point in their lives.

Yes, this is "normal" for BMW. In my 2008 535i, it always takes at least a minute to be able to change volume, radio channel or songs in Ipod and a while more for a phone bluetooth to connect. When I'm on the phone and start the car, it always has issue to transfer call to car's bluetooth. I-drive has Microsoft DNA.

In my wife's 2009 A4, as soon as the car starts, everything works right away except bluetooth takes about 10 secs and call always transfered to car's bluetooth smoothly which surprises me sometimes when I drive her car.

Try to boot a PC with Windows Vista and Macbook Leopard and you see why some computers take longer to boot.

hmmm I'm going to try this. My system has been lagging lately as well. I don't know, but it just seems likes its been slow recently. Sometimes i'm already driving and I still have that BMW screen up.

I have the same issue with the iDrive in my 2009. I bet that the new iDrive in the 2010 is not so slow on startup given the major upgrade.

Unfortunately the iDrive on the current e60 is [in today's rapidly changing world] old technology. You'll have to lower your expectations or buy a newer car. For me, the first 5-10 miles of my drive are very familiar to me - so waiting for NAV to come on line isn't usually a problem.

However, the BT switch-over is very very annoying. If I'm on a call and get into my car, the BT handoff takes 2-3 minutes  . So I've become accustomed to telling my callers - "Sorry if you're unable to hear me for the next few minutes - it's a feature BMW builds in to give me some quiet time for self-reflection!"

Anyone seeing better BT connect response time on the 2009/2010 e60s?? What's puzzling is the BT on my 2001 e38 740 was almost instantaneous. Same for the connect in my spouse's Toyota RAV4 BT.
