I've just had the Tyre Pressure Warning System pop up a tyre pressure message on the I-drive. Sure enough there's a nasty looking nail embedded in the middle of the driver's side front wheel. I had the warning pop up prior to the weekend and BMW topped up the air and reset the system. They didn't spot the nail at the time. Seems it's a slowish puncture.

So, in general, can the 19" 172's be repaired or do they need to be totally replaced?
I'm also fearful of taking the car to a tyre place in case they damage the alloys...

Yes they can be fixed quite easily. I agree with your concern re getting the rims damaged during the process .Just make them aware of your concerns , most good shops deal with high quality rims a know how to fix a flat without damaging the rims.

Good luck

Cheers! That should save me some cash from not having to buy a new tyre

yes ,should be no problem as long as the nail is embedded in the main tread pattern of the tyre - not in the sidewall and not too far near the edge.

Rolling again
Coz I was worried about the alloys, I tried to get BMW to repair the puncture but they could only replace the tyre - one of the beemer garages uses the Ford Rapid Fit outfit right next door to them who do all their MOT's and tyre stuff so I called them up and they did a good job on the repair with careful handling of the alloys. They put a plug in the hole and balanced the fronts - car feels solid after the balancing. Asked Rapid Fit about alignement and they declined to do that saying they were not confident they could do it on the 5er correctly. Aparently, BMW do a fully system geometry with sandbag weights and laser kit etc costing a whopping ?200 just for the check and then corrections are extra!!

The 172's do not have RF tyres!

So take your car asap to a good and reliable tyres shop and they will take care of it!

Moi Ricracing
I know about the 19" not being RF's but guess what - the beemer dealers act so surprised when you tell them - thye kept telling me 'thats really strange that you don't have run flats - all 5series have run flats' - and these are the people who maintain our cars...

I repaired one of my front PS2's a while back. A screw went through the centre of the tread.
I did another 20 000km's on the tyres without a problem.
