I'm having a variety of problems with sleep mode. For now my question is what affects how long it takes to go into sleep mode. I know a lot of people say it takes 16 minutes. Some say 30 minutes. I've seen 1 hour and 15 minutes. So what's with the variability?

Just spoke with an SA. The variability has to do with what modules were recently used in the car. Sleep mode could take anywhere from 15 minutes to 3 hours to engage.

It takes exactly 16 minutes, 24 seconds on my car (i've checked it with a stopwatch while trying to attach my Dension).
I've seen it take for over 30 minutes on a friends car.

When she stops talking!

Seriously, at least on Steptronic cars, there was a little light by the gear shifter that would stay on. When it went off, the car was in sleep mode...

I dunno about that one, my light has never when off since I owned the car. And my car was just reprogrammed in June. And everything is working flawlessly right now.

Are you saying that your light stays on constantly? I somehow find that hard to believe since if your car never slept, you'd have all sorts of issues.

How are you checking to see if the light is staying on? Are you looking through the window or are you opening the door? Are you opening the trunk or pressing any buttons on the remote? Do you have anything (like a cell phone) plugged in to an accessory outlet?

Take a look here for more details:

update (sorry for thread hijack) I snuck up on my car and checked the light, she was asleep. I hardly ever lock my door, and I think that is why.

The start push button also stays lit for a while after the car has been shut down and locked.. thats how you can see if your cars in sleep mode for manual trans.
