I can assure you that the pleasure of driving the 6spd on the E60 is much more than on a smaller car.? Shifting through 6 gears with a 340BHP V8 mated to the transmission is a high by itself.

I think that the transmission choice is the most personal of all the options. Auto isn't right or wrong. SMG isn't right or wrong. It's personal preference. If you like sticks, get the 6-speed manual.
I've never driven anything other than a manual including all four of my BMW 5-series. The 5 is literally the only car in its class that even gives you the option of a manual. So don't be put off by the "luxury car" or "large car" moniker. If you like a stick, you'll love the E60 manny tranny.

545i:
325 BHP
333 HP
BMW NA is sometimes using BHP, sometimes HP. And they really confuse everybody, since they sometimes show a HP number and say it's BHP, or they show BHP numbers and say it's HP.
In fact, the 545i has 333HP, like the M3.

[/quote]It's the same HP engine, the European specs are DIN vs SAE in the US.
If you love manual transmissions, get the manual. With the sports package the 545 feels like a much smaller car. It really is fun with the manual if you like to shift. You will need to replace the CDV and install a clutch stop to really make it right though.
