Isn't it the case that chains are mandatory, at times, in some alpine areas.

So you'd better be prepared.

ABC

In many places it is winter tyres or Chains.

But St Anton is Autobahn and major road all the way, with little in the way of major hill to the resort.

So I might well find chains to be of little use with winter tyres.

I am hoping Iceman or someone else from Germany/Austria can confirm or deny.

No hills then not mandatory but where it IS mandatory there are police ready to inspect that you are at least carrying chains and if you are not then you will be sent back.

Yes had that scenario driving up to Flaine a few years back.

Hit a major snowstorm back in Feb 1999.

Put my chains on as soon as we started the ascent and hit the snow.

About 5 miles short of the resort the gendarmarie were stopping anybody without chains...................mostly french !

But that is a steep winding mountain road ascent to the resort, St Anton is much less so.

Iceman,

On a similar note, I am driving to St Anton in Austria in February, via Germany.

I have put new Conti-winter-contact tyres on.

Is it likely that these will be sufficient in the event of snow/ice or is it advisable to take a set of chains as back up?
As aybeesea allready said, in some regions and on some roads chains are mandatory.

Also, when the road is icy, the best winter tires are not better than any summer tire. On ice there is no grip, no matter what tire you drive, so chains are allways good to have when driving in the Alps during winter time.

I'd recommend chains from http://www.vulcantire.com/index.html

Nice for lower clearance cars.

Quote BMW Magazine (and myself):

Winter tyres are highly recommended!

For a 550i 17" (8") wheels with 225/50 tyres or 18" wheels (8") with 225/45 tyres:

Continental W.C. TS 810, Bridgestone Blizzak LM 25 or Michelin P.Alpin PA 2.

OEM wheels makes it perfect!

Not sure about mammoth, but for big bear you should be fine. There is some ice in parts, but as long as you drive carefully, you should be fine. For the most part, there really isn't much snow on the ground.

When you go up, check out the cars that are up there. A lot of those guys are on summer tires as well.
